Home/Italian lessons for retirees

Italian lessons for retirees, at the pace you choose.

No exam, no classroom, nobody faster than you in the front row. Just an hour a week with a teacher in Italy and a language you have wanted for years.

"I am too old to learn a language" is not true

It is the single most common thing retired students say in a first lesson, and it is wrong in an interesting way. What genuinely declines with age is the ability to acquire a native accent, and the speed of raw memorisation. What does not decline is comprehension, pattern recognition, vocabulary building, or the ability to hold a conversation, and those are the things you actually want.

Meanwhile you have advantages a twenty-year-old does not: a large first-language vocabulary that makes Italian's Latin roots obvious, decades of knowing how you learn, the patience to sit with something difficult, and above all time you control. Regular daily practice is the strongest predictor of progress in any language, and retirement is the first point in most lives when it is genuinely available.

What we do differently

  • The pace is set by you, not a syllabus. If a tense needs three weeks instead of one, it takes three weeks. Nothing is being covered for the sake of coverage.
  • Repetition without embarrassment. You can ask the same question in four consecutive lessons. In a private lesson nobody is sighing.
  • Larger materials, clear audio, patient speech. Practical things: readable handouts, recordings you can slow down, a teacher who does not mind repeating.
  • No exams unless you want one. Some students do want a target, whether for citizenship or for the satisfaction. Most do not, and progress is measured in conversations instead.
  • Flexibility for real life. Travel, family, health, grandchildren. Lessons move. We would rather you paused for three weeks than quit.

You are not behind. There is no schedule you are supposed to be on.

Where retired students usually want to get to

Some are preparing for long, slow trips, the kind where you take an apartment in a town for a month rather than a hotel for three nights, and that is Italian for travel with more time and more ambition. Some are relocating, or spending part of the year in Italy, which brings in the practical language covered on our page about moving to Italy. Many are chasing family: a grandparent's town, cousins still living there, a surname that was changed at Ellis Island.

And a good number simply always wanted to. It is a completely sufficient reason, and in our experience those students are among the most consistent, because nothing about it is an obligation.

The technology, since it comes up

Lessons run on video call and you need very little: a laptop or tablet, a reasonable connection, headphones if you have them. If setting that up is daunting, your teacher will walk through it with you before the first lesson, for as long as it takes, and will not make you feel bad about it once.

Questions

Asked before every first lesson

Anything not covered here, ask us directly. There is nothing to sign.

Ask us
Am I too old to learn Italian?

No. What declines with age is accent acquisition and raw memorisation speed. Comprehension, vocabulary, pattern recognition and conversation do not, and you have more consistent practice time than younger learners ever do.

Can we go slowly?

Yes, and that is the main reason retired students choose private lessons. There is no syllabus to keep up with, so if something needs three weeks it takes three weeks.

What if I need to pause for travel or health?

Lessons move. Tell your teacher and we reschedule or pause. A break is always better than stopping altogether, and picking up again is easier than people expect.

Do I need to be good with computers?

Barely. A laptop or tablet with a camera and an internet connection. Your teacher will help you set up the video call beforehand if you would like, with no time pressure.
