"I know nothing" is the best place to start

Almost every student who books a first lesson with us says some version of the same thing: I did a year of Italian in college and remember nothing, or I tried an app for six months and still cannot say anything. That is not a failure of talent. It is what happens when you learn a language as a subject instead of as a way of talking to people.

So we start differently. In your first lesson you learn to introduce yourself, order something, and ask one question, and you say all of it out loud, badly, to a native speaker who does not mind at all. Grammar arrives later, as the explanation for something you can already do.

What the first three months look like

• Weeks 1–4. Sounds and rhythm, present tense, the hundred or so words that cover most daily situations. You can greet, order, ask prices, say where you are from and what you do.
• Weeks 5–8. Past tense, so you can tell someone what you did yesterday. Questions in both directions, so a conversation stops being an interview. Numbers, times, directions.
• Weeks 9–12. Future and conditional, opinions, preferences, disagreement. This is where students notice the shift: you stop translating in your head and start reaching for the Italian directly.

Nobody is fluent in twelve weeks and we will not pretend otherwise. But at twelve weeks you can hold a slow, real conversation with an Italian who is being patient with you, and that is the thing that makes everything afterwards feel possible.

Why one-to-one matters most at the start

A group class at beginner level is where confidence goes to die. There is always someone faster, and the natural response is to stay quiet and let them answer. In a private lesson there is nowhere to hide, which sounds worse and is in fact the entire point: you talk for most of the hour, your specific mistakes get corrected in the moment, and the pace is yours.

It also means the content is yours. A student going to Rome in April and a student calling Italian relatives on Sundays need the same grammar and completely different vocabulary. We build both.

What you need before your first lesson

• A laptop or tablet with a camera, and headphones if you have them.
• A notebook. Handwriting things you struggle to say is unreasonably effective.
• Twenty minutes on most days, not two hours on Sundays. Regularity beats volume every time.
• A reason. Travel, family, retirement, a film you want to watch without subtitles. Tell us what it is and the lessons bend towards it.
